Archives For June 2014

Depending on where you live, chances are you may already be dealing with some high temperatures. In my current location of Northwest Florida, like many places across the Southeast U.S., it felt like we went from winter to summer in a flash, virtually skipping all but a hint of spring. And now that summer is officially upon us, it’s time to face it. The heat isn’t going anywhere for awhile.

Last week I finally came to my own breaking (and subsequent breakthrough) point with the heat. I decided since there’s no beating it, I may as well stop complaining about it, and instead, strive to wake up each day and actively blaze through it.

It’s grueling now and in order to enjoy whatever it is you choose to do outside, you have to actively make it enjoyable for yourself. The good news is, regardless of where you live, there are things that you can do to make the heat more manageable. Along with proper fueling and staying hydrated, I’ve arrived at five ways to survive the summer heat. The following five considerations have helped me get out of my heat-induced funk and make the best of it.

Confession: I’m always craving egg salad of the eggless variety. Itching to make this salad a bit less straightforward and more playful, I decided to incorporate it into a colorful dinner spread, featuring local produce I picked up at the market last weekend. Rather than scooping the eggless salad onto a naked plate, or a bed of greens, I opted to let it rest gracefully atop sautéed Portobello mushroom caps. These eggless egg-dressed caps were accompanied by steamed asparagus and sliced tomato, resulting in a balanced meal ranking low on the glycemic index and high on the satisfaction scale.

Fuel Your Better

June 12, 2014 — 1 Comment

During the early part of this year, when I first started marathon training, I found myself struggling with proper fueling. Although at that point in time I had just kicked off my perfect oatmeal morning ritual, I had yet to develop a consistent regime for fueling before, during, or after runs.

Sure, I was drinking a reasonable amount of water, but I wasn’t taking any extra measures to replace electrolytes. As things heated up and the marathon rapidly approached, I found myself ending my long runs covered in salt, and feeling dehydrated and spent. Once I reached that point, no amount of water could revive me. Like many, I knew I could and should be fueling better, but I wasn’t taking the necessary strides.

With the arrival of June has come getting back to some consistency within the running realm. I must say, the month of May was all over the place after taking a solid 10 days off of running immediately following the marathon. Then, just as I was getting back into some sort of swing, Hangout Fest and Memorial Day weekends happened back to back, and meanwhile the weather heated up tremendously.

If you are looking for something to make you feel even hotter when it’s already 90 degrees out, just go for a run on an asphalt track.

This past weekend was the first weekend I’ve been back at home in awhile without some sort of major happening taking place, which meant ample downtime after playing catch up for a few days.

For a delayed birthday celebration Saturday evening, my mom and I enjoyed an evening of grilling on her best friend’s deck overlooking Pensacola Bay. During the summer months my body especially craves lighter meals, which urges me to really focus on clean eating. Once it cools off a bit and gets slightly more tolerable outside in the evening hours, firing up the grill offers a festive way to enjoy fresh vegetables. Our vegetable features for Saturday evening consisted of grilled Portobello mushrooms, zucchini and onions. For a simple marinade, these veggies were brushed with a blend of garlic, salt, pepper and basil in Walnut EVOO.
