Although it still seems surreal, exactly a week ago today, I was running my first full marathonthe St. Jude Country Music Marathon in Nashville, Tennessee.

“You ran a marathon today!” yelled a lady in the crowd, while jumping up and down and pointing her finger at me as I was running down the final hill, and making the turn to approach the finish line. “Trust The Struggle” read loud and clear on my wrist, as I sprinted my way to the finish.

Running How You Feel

Last Saturday I headed up to Atlanta to reunite with my running partner Martha so that we could embark on the longest run of our marathon training together. Our terrain of choice for this endeavor was the Silver Comet Trail. This paved trail starts in Smyrna, Ga., just minutes away from downtown Atlanta, and spans 61.5 miles to the Georgia/Alabama state line. What once was an abandoned railroad line, is now heavily used as a gold mine for cyclists, walkers, runners, rollerbladers and more.

Race
The morning after setting a PR at the Rock n’ Roll New Orleans Half Marathon (March 2013), I discovered this encouraging word while en route to get coffee. 

Seeing as how I learn something new every single day, it’s safe to say, not only are there countless items I deem as “rules of the road,” the list continues to grow.

Since my current marathon training is the most extensive training I’ve ever done, it seems only natural I’ve been reflecting (more than normal) on all the things I’ve learned through training for anything over the years. No matter what you are working to achieve, here are five training-related rules of the road that will hopefully help you on your journey.
